Sangen Zhao, D., researcher, doctoral supervisor, recipient of the National Excellent Youth Fund, a high-level talent of Fujian Province, Class B. He is also a youth member of the Chinese Crystallographic Society and a youth member of the Laser Application Branch of the China Optical and Optoelectronic Association, a youth editorial board member of Applied Chemistry, a youth editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Structural Chemistry, and a member of the He has been selected by the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAS) as one of the "Young Talents Support Project", a young talent in Fujian Province, an outstanding member of CAS Youth Promotion Committee, a team of 100 members of CAS West China Research Institute, and a special project for young talents of CAS West China Research Institute.

     He received his PhD degree from the Institute of Physical and Chemical Technology, CAS in 2012 (supervisor: Dr. Yicheng Wu) and joined IFPRI in the same year. He has published more than 60 SCI papers, including J. Am. Chem. Soc. (6), Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. (9), Nat. Commun. (1), Sci. Bull. (1), Acc. Chem. Res. (1), CCS. Chem. (1), Sci. Bull. (1), Acc. Chem. Res. (1), CCS. Chem. (2), Coord. Chem. Rev (2); 20 granted invention patents, including 1 U.S. patent and 2 PCT international patents; awarded the second prize of Fujian Provincial Natural Science Award in 2019 (second completer) and selected as Emerging Investigators of Crystal Growth & Design in 2018, 2016 He has also been invited to give invited lectures in academic conferences at home and abroad.

   Our group mainly focuses on photonic functional crystals, including nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals and birefringent crystals, which play a key role in international research frontiers, such as quantum communication, photolithography, laser display, optical frequency comb, and optical quantum information, etc. At present, we have achieved a series of leading innovative research results.

a) Propose the new concept of "beryllium-free" NLO crystals: We have proposed the innovative idea of "beryllium-free deep-ultraviolet NLO crystals" for the first time. Based on this concept, we have successfully designed and synthesized a series of new excellent beryllium-free deep-UV NLO crystals, which possess largely reinforced layer connection in comparison with that of the sole practical deep-UV NLO crystal KBBF, and thus overcome demerits of serious layer growth habits of KBBF.

b) Propose the new concept of "non-π-conjugated" NLO crystals: We have proposed the innovative idea of "non-π-conjugated deep-ultraviolet NLO crystals" for the first time. In addition, we have developed the "local polarity-induced assembly" strategy, and further synthesized a variety of non-π-conjugated deep-ultraviolet NLO crystals with outstanding performance.

c) New applications of optical quantum information: We have proposed some strategies to design crystals with large birefringence efficiently, and further discovered a number of crystals with large birefringence. Some of them have large birefringence and excellent NLO properties simultaneously, which have significant applications in quantum communication, photonic modulators, polarized photonic devices, structured light fields, etc.

Research Interests

His research interests mainly focus on the design, synthesis, crystal growth, and characterizations of new nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals, which feature non-centrosymmetric crystal structures and thus exhibit second harmonic genaration responses. He and co-authors designed and synthesized a series of borate beryllium-free deep-UV NLO crystals which overcome the layering growth tendency of the benchmark KBBF crysytal. Furthermore, they discovered a variety of non-π-congruated deep-UV NLO materials, proposed effective design strategies, and revealed new mechanisms on the structure-property relationships. In recent years, he and co-authors has published more than 80 SCI papers, including the first-author/corresponding-author papers in Angew. Chem. (4 papers), Nat. Commun. (1 paper), and JACS (6 papers), as well as Coord. Chem. Rev. (2 papers), with total citations by other researchers for more than 2500 times. In particular, 5 papers are authorized as ESI Highly Cited Papers. More than 10 Chinese and 1 US patents are authorized.
