Major research directions:
1. Fundamental research and engineering technology development of PEMFC lifetime improvement and cost reduction.
Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) based on hydrogen has the advantages of fast start-up, high power density and zero emission and is considered as one of the best candidates for future power supply of clean vehicles. But the high cost and poor durability of PEMFC under dynamic conditions are the major barriers of being accepted as a commercially viable product.
The main research include: low-Pt and Non-Pt electrocatalyst; new proton exchange membrane materials; new membrane electrode assembly structure; fuel cell accelerated stress test protocols; fuel cell degradation mechanism under dynamic conditions; fuel cell environmental adaptability; fuel cell uniformity; cheap bipolar plate material; gas channel structure design; simulation and optimization of fuel cell model; fuel cell control strategy; system integration.
2. Development of regenerative fuel cell system
The regenerative fuel cell system (RFC) combine the water electrolysis and H2-O2 fuel cell technology. The fuel hydrogen and the oxidant oxygen for fuel cell can regenerate by water electrolysis, making RFC like a storage cell. Further, the RFC combined with solar power is currently the most advantage of space renewable energy technologies.
The main research include: key materials for SPE electrolysis, component development and optimization; fuel cell system technology for special circumstances; RFC system integration and optimization; RFC system model and optimization.

The individual has applied for over 700 Chinese patents, with more than 380 already granted. In 2012, the project "High-Efficiency Medium/Low-Pressure Solid Electrolyte Water Electrolysis Technology," led by this person, was awarded the Dalian Science and Technology Progress First Prize. In 2013, the project "Research on Electrochemical Interfaces and Processes in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells," led by this person, received the Liaoning Province Natural Science Second Prize. In 2017, the project "Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Technology for Aircraft," led by this person, was awarded the Dalian Technology Invention First Prize. In 2020, the "Next-Generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology R&D and Application Team," led by this person, was honored with the Chinese Academy of Sciences Science and Technology Promotion Award. In 2023, the project "Key Technologies and Applications of Proton Exchange Membrane Hydrogen-Air Fuel Cells," led by this person, won the Dalian Technology Invention First Prize. In 2024, the project "Development and Engineering Application of a Megawatt-Level Proton Exchange Membrane Hydrogen Electrolysis/Power Generation Integrated System," where this person served as the first completer, was awarded the Anhui Province Science and Technology Progress First Prize.
