Research Areas

Major research directions:

1. Fundamental research and engineering technology development of PEMFC lifetime improvement and cost reduction.

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) based on hydrogen has the advantages of fast start-up, high power density and zero emission and is considered as one of the best candidates for future power supply of clean vehicles. But the high cost and poor durability of PEMFC under dynamic conditions are the major barriers of being accepted as a commercially viable product.

The main research include: low-Pt and Non-Pt electrocatalyst; new proton exchange membrane materials; new membrane electrode assembly structure; fuel cell accelerated stress test protocols; fuel cell degradation mechanism under dynamic conditions; fuel cell environmental adaptability; fuel cell uniformity; cheap bipolar plate material; gas channel structure design; simulation and optimization of fuel cell model; fuel cell control strategy; system integration.

2. Development of regenerative fuel cell system

     The regenerative fuel cell system (RFC) combine the water electrolysis and H2-O2 fuel cell technology. The fuel hydrogen and the oxidant oxygen for fuel cell can regenerate by water electrolysis, making RFC like a storage cell. Further, the RFC combined with solar power is currently the most advantage of space renewable energy technologies.

    The main research include: key materials for SPE electrolysis, component development and optimization; fuel cell system technology for special circumstances; RFC system integration and optimization; RFC system model and optimization.

Honors & Distinctions

​ In 2012, the project “efficient low-voltage solid polymer electrolyte water electrolysis technology” completed by him obtained the first prize of Dalian Science and Technology Progress Award. In 2013, the project “proton exchange membrane fuel cell electrochemical interface and process studies” received the second prize of Natural Science Award in Liaoning Province. In 2015, he got the special government allowances and was chosen as young scientific and technological leader in the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 2016, he was Selected for the National Ten-thousand Talents Program. In 2017, the project “Proton exchange membrane fuel cell power sources technology for aircraft applications” obtained the first prize of Dalian Technology Invention Award.

He has applied for more than 600 patents and more than 290 patents were granted.
