Research Areas

My research covers photonics technology areas including optical fiber devices, optical fiber gratings, fiber laser and fiber sensor. With a strongly application oriented research and close collaboration with industries, I have been the investigator or principle researcher on a number of research and development programmes. The research output has been outstanding with over 30 publications.

Highlights:

Ÿ   Special fiber gratings fabrication technologies

Ø  Various special fiber gratings are written including 45 degree tiled fiber gratings, excessively tilted fiber gratings, type Ia high temperature resistant fiber gratings, small-period long period fiber gratings, long period fiber gratings in few-mode fiber, and fiber gratings at special wavebands.

Ø  A novel dual-beam-interference-scanning fabrication system is designed and giant chirp fiber gratings with small dispersion and wide bandwidth are realized accordingly.

Ÿ   45 degree tilted fiber gratings and their applications

Ø  An all-fiber normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser with 45 degree tilted fiber grating is experimentally demonstrated, and stable dissipative solitons with high polarization extinction ratio of 26 dB are implemented which contributes to the chirped pulse amplification systems.

Ø  An all-fiber polarization interference comb-like filter based on 45 degree titled fiber gratings with free spectral range of 0.164 nm is developed. And the new filter based all-fiber multiwavelength laser is firstly introduced with flat and uniform spectrum and over 80 peaks within 3 dB.

Ø  45 degree tilted fiber grating based in-fiber polarizers are fabricated in 850 nm and 1310 nm small core polarization maintaining fibers and initially applied in open-loop fiber optic gyroscopes.

Ÿ   Excessively tilted fiber grating based fiber device and mode-locked fiber laser

Ø  The excessively tilted fiber gratings are originally introduced into saturable absorber based on the coupling property. Stable mode-locked operation is also achieved for the first time in an all-fiber laser employing excessively tilted fiber grating based Fe3O4 saturable absorber.

Ø  A novel dispersion management device based on excessively tilted fiber gratings are proposed for high energy ultrashort pulse generation.

Ÿ   High temperature resistant fiber gratings based fiber laser with ultra-short cavity

Ø  Fiber gratings with high temperature resisitance are fabricated in Yb-doped fibers and Er-doped fibers respectively. At 500°C, the gratings still have high reflectivity of over 99%.

Ø  Using a pair of high temperature resistant Yb-doped fiber gratings, a 1 μm fiber laser with ultra-short cavity (10 mm) and single longitudinal mode is obtained in the experiment. The laser with linewidth of 16 pm can operates well at 450°C with over 50 dB SNR, which is of great significance for the high-precision long-distance fiber sensing in high temperature environment.

Ÿ   Multimode fiber based mode-locked fiber laser

Ø  A mode-locked all-fiber laser using the hybrid structure of step index multimode fiber and graded index multimode fiber as a new saturable absorber based on nonlinear multimode interference is demonstrated. The single pulsed energy of 2.44 nJ was the highest result based on hybrid multimode fiber structure of the time.

Ø  Ultrafast soliton and stretched pulse switchable mode-locked fiber laser with hybrid structure of multimode fiber is reported for the first time. Transition between conventional soliton and stretched-pulse in 1.5 μm mode-locked fiber laser is realized by simply increasing the pump power.

Ø  Both in-phase and anti-phase two-soliton bound states are firstly observed in a passively mode-locked fiber laser based on hybrid structure of multimode fiber.
