Research Areas

  • Light-matter interactions and their applications in condensed matter physics: Methodology, instruments and applications of synchrotron radiation based X-rays scattering (XRS), diffraction (XRD), reflection (XRR), surface pair distribution function (SPDF) and grazing-incidence photon correlation spectroscopy (GI-XPCS); Applications of X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES); X-rays-matter interactions, with current focus on the construction  and applications of the Low-Dimension Structure Probe (LoDiSP) beamline at High Energy Photon Source (HEPS).

  • Growth and characterization of thin films, heterojunctions and nanostructures: Growth mechanism and surface processes at atomic scale; Physical effects promoting layer-by-layer growth (for achieving atomic-scale smooth abrupt surface/interface used in miltilayer-based devices); Formation mechanisms of nanostructured pattern on surface (for achieving surface nanostructures used for catalysis, sensors and nanodevices). Current research is using evanescent waves to modulate thin-film growth for altering the island-like growth into layer-by-layer growth.

  • Structure Property - Processing interplays of functional materials: Studies of structure-roperties realtion of functional materials via cooperation with users; Phase transition of low-dimension functional materials, expecially interface high-temperature superconductors; Investigation of p-type transparent conducting oxide thin films and defect structures in compound semiconductors. Current research focus is on the modulations of quantum phase transition of low-dimensional materials via dimensional effects  (thickness-induced quantum confinement effect, lattice symmetry variations,  etc.) and interfacial effects (surface/interface reconstruction, relaxation, strain, polarization, oxygen octahedron rotation, and so on).
