Dr. Liu focuses on studies to link plant ecology, geography and phylogeny together to know how plants adapt, distribute and evolve through their functional traits (mainly plant hydraulic and thermal traits) and climatic niches. She is using methods including phylogenetic models, ecophysiological experiments and geographic data analyses.

She has published over 80 SCI papers (Google Scholar 2026 h-index =31), including The Innovation, Nature Ecology & Evolution, Science Advances (ESI Highly Cited Paper), New Phytologist (three), Journal of Experimental Botany (two), Journal of Ecology, Functional Ecology (cover story) and others. She is editors for Functional Ecology (associate editor), Plant Diversity (Outstanding editor in 2023), Biological Diversity, and a junior editor for The Innovation, Eco-Environment & Health and Journal of Plant Ecology, and has peer-reviewed many manuscripts for over 20 SCI journals.

From 2026.06, she becomes the Director of the Ecology and Environment Research Center, South China Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
