Research Areas
The research primarily focuses on plant taxonomy, plant floristics, biogeography, and evolutionary biology. It includes in-depth studies on the flora of the Tibetan Plateau, the flora of the Chinese Himalayas, the formation of biogeographical patterns, and plant groups such as the Mimosaceae and Fabaceae. Extensive and systematic research has been conducted on the formation, evolution, and adaptive mechanisms of plant diversity on the Tibetan Plateau. This research has resulted in distinctive contributions:
Origins and Geographical Patterns of Alpine Plant Diversity on the Tibetan Plateau: The research has revealed the origins and mechanisms of the formation of geographical patterns of alpine plant diversity on the Tibetan Plateau, enriching the theory of the evolution and formation of biogeographical patterns. It has marked a shift in plant geography research in China from mere phenomenological description to mechanistic explanation.
Adaptive Mechanisms of Alpine Plant Diversity: In studying the adaptive mechanisms of alpine plants on the Tibetan Plateau, new mechanisms of adaptive evolution in alpine plants (such as the special structures of Saussurea and Rheum and the camouflaged coloration evolution in Fritillaria) have been discovered. These findings have led to a series of original and important results, promoting the transition of alpine plant functional ecology research in China from a non-existent field to an established one.
Field Surveys and Specimen Collections: The researcher has made significant contributions to investigating and collecting plant flora in the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. They have led or participated in expeditions in regions such as the Xizang Plateau, Hengduan Mountains, much of Southwest China, Laos, and Uzbekistan, collecting over 20,000 plant specimens and more than 100,000 samples. Notably, a winter survey lasting over eight months in the Yarlung Zangbo River (Medog region) resulted in the collection of a vast amount of primary data, filling gaps in poorly studied areas of plant flora research and contributing to the study of Chinese plant diversity. This work has been widely acknowledged by peers and frequently cited in studies on plant diversity, including floristic studies, monographs, taxonomic revisions, and species catalogues.
