Research Areas
Prof. Zhang’s researches are focused on the discovery, biosynthesis, and structural diversification of marine microbial natural drugs. More than 150 novel marine microbial natural products were discovered, isolated and structurally elucidated; biosynthetic gene clusters for more than 15 microbial natural products were cloned and characterized. The biological functions for > 40 microbial biosynthetic enzymes were demonstrated, such as novel oxidative/reductive cyclase, halogenase, glycosyltransferases and kinases. He has published more than 70 original papers, including Science, Nat Biotechnol, Nat Chem Biol, Nat Commun, Mol Cell, J Am Chem Soc, Angew Chem Int Ed, Chem Sci, Org Lett, etc. He has received numerous awards for his research.
1. Isolation and Structural Characterization of Microbial Natural Products from Special Marine Ecosystems.
We isolate and characterize actinobacterial strains from special marine ecosystem, and the strains are screened for bioactive natural products with antibacterial, antitumor, antiviral and insecticidal activities. The bioactive compounds are subsequently isolated, purified and structurally elucidated.Education and Experience
