General

Chao Wang (M’99, SM’13) received the Ph.D. degree in the earth science from Nanjing University, China in 1989.

Since 1989, he has been with the Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), working on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data processing and applications. From 1992 to 1993 he was with the Microwaves and Radar Institute, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Germany as the Guest Scientist. In 1995 he was with Istituto di Ricerca sulle Onde Elettromagnetiche, CNR, Italy as the Visiting Scholar. Since 1997, he was the Deputy Director and professor of CAS-IRSA. From 2004 to 2007 he was the Deputy Director and professor of China Remote Sensing Satellite Ground Station (RSGS), CAS. From 2007 to 2012 he was a professor with the Center for Earth Observation and Digital Earth (CEODE), CAS. He was a professor with the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth (RADI), CAS from 2012 to 2019. He is currently a professor with the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS), and  Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIRCAS), CAS. He has been PIs and Co-Is of several national and international SAR projects, including those of SIR-C/X-SAR, ERS-1/2, JERS-1, GlobeSAR China campaign, ALOS-1/2, COSMO-SkyMed, TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, and the ESA-MOST DRAGON-2/3 programs. He is now the PI of the key project funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (41331176), PI of the fundamental scientific device project funded by National Natural Science foundation of China (42327801). He is the author/coauthor of more than 180 papers and 5 books in PolSAR, InSAR and SAR image processing. His research interests include SAR image processing and geoscience applications.

Prof. Wang was serving as the Chair of IEEE GRSS Beijing Chapter from 2003 to 2012. He is an IEEE senior member. He initiated "SAR in Big Data Era" conference with Prof. Alberto Moreira and other professors in 2017, which was technically sponsored by IEEE GRSS. BIGSARDATA was held successfully in 2019, 2021 and 2023. The Special Issue "SAR in Big Data Era III" in Remote Seisng is now open for submission.

He is a member of Standing Council of China Society of Image and Graphics. He has contributed to the European SAR conferences and Asia-Pacific SAR conferences as a member of the Technical Program Committees.
