Research Areas

As a senior engineer (a researcher actually) at the Earth System Numerical Simulation Science Center, IAP, CAS, my work is deeply embedded in the field of climate modeling and climate change. I have been a member of the CAS Earth System Model (CAS-ESM) team since my PhD candidate, with a focus on developing models that encompass the whole atmosphere, from the surface up to the lower thermosphere. My research particularly targets the upper-atmosphere extension within the IAP Atmospheric General Circulation Model (IAP AGCM) to create a high-top AGCM, which serves as the atmospheric component of the CAS-ESM. The IAP AGCM, with a history dating back to the 1980s, traditionally concentrated on the troposphere. Recognizing the need for an expanded scope, I successfully extended the model top from 40 km to 80 km in the first high-top version, and subsequently to 150 km in the second version. These high-top models have demonstrated superior performance in several areas, including mesospheric climatology and the simulation of the stratospheric Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), compared to their low-top predecessor. Additionally, I use the high-top model to participate the second phase of the QBO initiative (QBOi) project.
