社会计算(Social Computing)是指利用计算机和互联网等技术手段,结合社会学、心理学、人机交互、数据挖掘、机器学习、网络科学等多个学科领域的理论和方法,对大规模社会系统和复杂社会现象进行建模、仿真、数据分析和预测的研究领域。

随着计算机、互联网、移动智能终端、社交网络等技术的快速发展,随着数字社会、智慧社会成为国家中长期发展的核心目标之一,社会计算逐渐成为了一个横跨文理工的新兴交叉学科领域,被广泛应用于社会网络分析、网络舆情、计算传播、应急管理、公众健康、在线社区和众包等方面,具有广阔的发展和应用前景。

本科研团队是国际上开创社会计算这一多学科交叉领域研究的先驱和主要贡献者之一,在我国最早建立了社会计算硕博培养专业方向,创立了社会计算与社会智能专委会,组织了我国首届社会计算研讨会(2008年),举办了首届国际社会计算大会(2009年)。
