Research Areas

     DIVERSITY OF SOIL FAUNA

It includes the dynamics of the important functional groups of macrofauna, nematodes, collembola and mites, soil food web and relative to environmental factors, and its spatial distribution pattern in large scale. We are also interested in analyzing the relationships between the underground nutrients and the soil food web, the interactions of the underground food webs and the aboveground plant functional groups in the context of human activities and climate change, etc. in mountainous regions of Southwestern China.

PROCESS OF SOIL NUTRIENT CYCLING AND IMPROVEMENT OF ECOLOGICAL SERVICE OF ECOSYSTEMS

This include studies on the southwestern mountain forests, agroforestry systems, burned forest area and high altitude farmland, with the aims to explore the cycles of carbon and nitrogen, phosphorus and other elements of the soils and its responses to global change and human control, and as well as biological mechanism of soil animal, microorganism and enzyme. Some attentions will be paid to the studies of plant ecophysiology, forest management, crop cultivation, water and fertilizer management, soil and water conservation for improving comprehensive benefits of ecosystem services.

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION PATTERN OF ECOSYSTEM AND BIODIVERSITY

On the basis of investigating typical plant communities in southwestern mountainous regions, the remote sensing and geographic information system and other methods, combined with statistical methods will be used to study the spatial distribution patterns of typical plant communities, rare and endangered plants and important forest ecosystems. Its formation mechanism will be discussed on the basis of previous studies in the fields of palynology, paleoclimate, plant systemic evolution. Hot spot area will thus be identified for providing suggestions of protection, control measures and policy in this region.

ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION OF DEGRADED ECOSYSTEM CAUSED BY KEY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS

There have being some ecological wound caused by important construction projects such as hydropower station, road and mining in southwestern mountain region, dry valley, and high altitude fragile area. To obtain technical support for the ecological recovery of these anthropogenic wound, suitable plant species will be screened. Soil water and fertilizer managements, plant community design as well as reconstruction studied will be our main focus.

REGIONAL ECOLOGICAL PLANNING AND PROTECTION DESIGN

The knowledge of botany, ecology, natural geography, landscape ecology, geographical information system will be used to study ecosystem assessment, ecological civilization construction planning, natural protected area planning, ecological protection zones delineation, ecological service function evaluation, ecological security pattern optimization, and ecological compensation. This studies will provide the basis for national and regional ecological civilization construction.

Prof. Kaiwen Pan directed and trained 40 master and doctoral graduates in botany and ecology, among of them, there have been 4 overseas doctoral graduate students from Egypt, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Nepal. At present, He is guiding and cultivating 10 doctoral and master's degree students, including 4 overseas doctoral students from Pakistan, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

We warmly welcome individuals with good academic background in natural geography, botany, ecology, forestry, soil, biology, agronomy, and as well as remote sensing and geographic information systems to join our research team for pursuing a doctor's degree or cooperative researches. University of Chinese Academy of Sciences may provide fellowships for International Students, please see
