从事广义报春花科的分类学、系统演化、生物地理学和保育研究。近年来的主要研究方向为：1.点地梅属和报春花属的分类修订；2.以点地梅属为例，开展青藏高原地区的物种形成机制研究；3.以报春花属物种为对象，研究中国南方丹霞和喀斯特生境下，环境异质性与物种多样性形成之间的关系；4.开展报春花属和紫金牛属极小种群的保育工作。
