Research Areas

My research interests mainly focus on integrating various components of Coupled Human and Natural Systems (CHANS) to understand socioeconomic and environmental interconnections and to create sustainability solutions.
General research topics include: 1) how climate change and human activities (e.g., land use, urbanization, grazing etc.) affect the ecosystem processes and services, and also the contributions of these different drivers and their interactions; 2) how environmental changes impact the human well-being, how adaptation actions work and what the implications of adaptation measures for resilience of both ecosystems and human societies are; 3) what are complex interactions among components in human and natural systems, and how human-environment interactions are influenced by policies.
Approaches for these studies include field measures and household surveys, spatial analysis of remote sensing and geo-spatial data, statistical analysis, and complex systems modeling (e.g., agent-based modeling). Especially, as Dr. Jianguo Liu of Michigan State University has developed a telecoupling framework as a system integration approach, I’m recently trying to use this new framework to solve some integrated environmental issues, e.g., assessing the effects of payment for ecosystem services programs.
