General

Wang Yong received his PhD degree in East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in 2004. After working as a postdoctoral research fellow at Tufts University and MIT, he joined state key laboratory of bioreactor engineering in ECUST as a professor. He is currently a professorPrincipal Investigator of the CAS-Key Laboratory of Synthetic Biology, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research is centered on the design and assembly of recombinant microorganisms for the production of complex natural products. A particular focus is the elucidation of design principles for the production of unnatural natural compounds within the framework of the nascent field of synthetic biology. More than 70 papers have been published.


Research Areas

Our research is centered on the design and construction of recombinant microbial bio-systems for the production of complex therapeutic natural products. Current efforts include the isolation and identification of different genes/modules/pathways from various resources, development of tools and methodologies for novel biosynthetic pathway design and the natural products heterologous biosynthesis in the engineered microbes. We particular focus on: 1) elucidating design principles for the production of natural or unnatural natural compounds by using synthetic biology; 2) developing more efficient and economical methods to generate biological products.
