Research Areas

As a PhD supervisor, Professor Jiangyu Mao has been working mainly on climate dynamics associated with in Asian monsoon, atmospheric intraseasonal oscillation, ocean-atmosphere interaction, and application of satellite data as well as evaluation and improvement of climate models.

Prof. Mao examined systematically the variation in the configuration of the subtropical anticyclone during seasonal transition and its relation with the Asian monsoon onset, whereby proposing a new concept “seasonal transition axis” of the subtropical anticyclone and a new index for measuring the summer monsoon onset. He discovered that the typhoon activity is one of mechanisms responsible for triggering the summer monsoon onset over the South China Sea (SCS) based on case studies. He also found that the 3060-day oscillation and the 10–20-day oscillation are two dominant modes that control the activities of the SCS summer monsoon for most of years, but these two modes may not always exist simultaneously in a particular year. Furthermore, he suggested the intraseasonal variability of the Yangtze summer rainfall in association with a Rossby wave-like coupled circulation-convection system that propagates northwestward into the northern SCS from equatorial western North Pacific. Using numerical simulation, he exaimed how ENSO-related spring rainfall over eastern China is modulated by Pacific Decadal Oscillation. So far, he has published more than 100 international and domestic journal articles.
