Research Areas

Her previous research focuses on groundwater age dating using environmental multi-tracers, the dynamics of fresh and saline groundwater in coastal aquifers of the north China, including seawater/saltwater intrusion in Circum-Bohai-Sea Region. Her current research concerns variable-density groundwater flow and solute transport in heterogeneous porous media and karst aquifers, the effects of subsurface heterogeneity on free convection and the impact of salinization on the evolution of groundwater quality. In North China Plain (NCP), groundwater over-exploitation from deep fresh aquifer (more than 300 m depth) has resulted in that the shallow saltwater bodies have been intruded into deep fresh aquifer. Some deep fresh water has also been salinized in recent years. It will be an obstacle for realizing the groundwater sustainable utilization and management in NCP. On methodology, besides the isotopic and hydrochemical indicators will be used, numerical modeling and geophysical methods will be integrated for understanding saline water transport processes.

Work Experience

01/2014-12/2017:

National Natural Science Foundation of China,“Characterization of groundwater flow system and evolution of fresh-saltwater transition research in coastal area of the northChina(No.40801018) (2009-2011). China Postdoctoral Science Foundation Project,Water cycle processes and mechanism of seawater intrusion in the coastal area of the northChina(No.20070420518) (2008-2009). Based on the extensive investigations and data set, this research aims to demonstrate how major ion chemistry, isotopes, hydraulic data and hydrochemical modelling can be combined in a multi-approach study related to saltwater intrusion to identify the different salt sources and their contribution to the present horizontal and vertical salinity distribution, estimate  the groundwater age and mixing behaviour between different end-members,and improve the understanding of reactive transport processes in determining the hydrogeochemical evolution of different types of groundwater in the south coast aquifer of Laizhou Bay, China.

01/2016-12/2018:

Zhu Kezhen Outstanding Young Scholars Program of of Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences:Evolution and control of seawater intrusion under complex boundaries between land and ocean (No.2015RC102)

01/2012-12/2015:

Programs from the Youth Innovation Promotion Association (No.2012040), focusing on seawater intrusion monitoring and analysis around Circum-Bohai-Sea-Region.

07/2009-2014.10:

State Basic Research Development Program (973 Program) of China, “Groundwater evolution mechanism and management of groundwater resources in the North China Plain” (No.2010CB428805) (2009-2014). One subtopic of this project aims to realize and delineate the mechanism of shallow saltwater movement into deep fresh aquifers (more than 300 m depth), due to the extensive groundwater exploitation in the Quaternary deep aquifers of North China Plain.

07/2007-12/2010:

Investigation of seawater intrusion status around Circum-Bohai-Sea-Region, north China.

07/2007-07/2009:

Participated in the project titled “Catchment hydrological cycle models based on environmental isotope and water chemistry techniques” financially supported by the National Sciences Foundation of China (NO.40671034) and “Evaluation and Investigation of Environmental Geology in Circum-Bohai-Sea Region, China” supported by China Geologic Survey. Research is related to Groundwater modeling to the interface between groundwater and seawater in the coast area where seawater intrusion occurs commonly. And it is also including different water samplings in the field and doing some hydrogeochemical experiment and isotopic analysis.

05/2003-06/2007:

She completed my PhD thesis in 2007, which was titled: "Analysis of Groundwater Flow System and Modeling of Hydrogeochemical Evolution in Xinzhou basin,China". I participated in Groundwater survey project titled “Evaluation and Investigation on Groundwater Resources and Environmental Problems of Six Big Basins in Shanxi Province of NorthChina(No.200310400009)” and financially supported by China Geologic Survey. With responsibility for Regionalization of Karst-water system in the mountain area of Shanxi. Mainly aiming at GIS-based regionalization of a Karst water system in Xishan mountain area of Taiyuan basin, and mapping of Karst-water system around mountainous area and recharge to porous water in Xinzhou basin, and some important environment problems in Xinzhou Basin.
