著名高能物理学家,领导完成了北京正负电子对撞机上的北京谱仪III(BESIII)的设计、研制、运行和物理研究,技术上达到国际先进水平并发现了一系列新粒子和新现象,在轻强子谱和粲物理研究方面处于国际领先地位。开创了我国中微子实验研究,提出了大亚湾中微子实验方案并率领团队完成了实验的设计、研制、运行和物理研究,发现了一种新的中微子振荡模式。该成果入选美国《科学》杂志2012年全球十大科学突破,获得2016年度国家自然科学一等奖。提出了江门中微子实验的构想并领导了其研制,是建设环形正负电子对撞机(CEPC)的主要提出者和推动者。积极推动自主技术研发,取得多项具有国际影响的技术突破。成功组织多个国际大型合作项目,大幅度提升了中国的国际的影响力。
因在粒子物理实验领域的突出贡献,被评为“十佳全国科技工作者”、CCTV十大科技创新人物,荣获周光召基金基础科学奖、何梁何利基金科技进步奖、潘诺夫斯基实验粒子物理学奖、“日经亚洲奖”科学技术奖、基础物理学突破奖、庞蒂科夫奖、“影响中国”2018年度科技人物、未来科学大奖-物质科学奖等。他也被授予泰国苏南纳里大学、德国波鸿大学名誉博士、意大利共和国指挥官勋章。
