主要从事宽带隙半导体材料与器件、二维材料与光电器件及光伏材料与器件研究。发展了一种制备六方氮化硼（h-BN）二维原子晶体的新方法，研制出多种二维异质结光电器件；实现了基于h-BN中间层的远程外延，为制备高质量二维范德华异质结提供了一种新方法。首次成功制备出异质外延生长的立方氮化硼（c-BN）薄膜，为实现c-BN薄膜作为高温电子材料奠定了基础。领导的课题组两次创造有机无机钙钛矿太阳电池效率的世界纪录，研制出高效稳定的无机钙钛矿电池以及钙钛矿LEDs。已主持或承担国家重点研发计划、科技部863、973计划、自然科学基金以及中科院战略先导计划等项目30余项，在Nature Mater., Nature Energy, Nature Photon., Nature Commun., Adv. Mater.等学术期刊发表SCI论文200余篇，论文被他引17000余次，获授权发明专利26项；曾获北京市自然科学一等奖、北京市科学技术进步二等奖、中科院优秀导师奖（3次）、中国科学院朱李月华优秀教师奖、领雁银奖等，指导的研究生3人获中科院优秀博士学位论文，7人获中科院院长奖，8人获中科院优秀毕业生，多人次获国家奖学金。
