Research Areas
Tielin Zhang is a PI in the Laboratory of Cognition and Decision Intelligence for Complex Systems, Institute of Automation Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is also an associate professor at the School of Artificial Intelligence, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interest focus on the spiking neural networks (SNNs), brain-inspired new chips, and some DVS-based and BCI-based intelligent applications.
Zhang's lab combines biology and computational science deeply, including but not limited to multi-scale plasticity, working memory, decision-making, and multi-sensory integration. Zhang has proposed some new SNN architectures and learning algorithms that have remarkedly promoted the performance of SNNs. For example, the self-backpropagation of synaptic plasticity has been proposed to elevate computational efficiency in both artificial neural networks (ANNs) and SNNs (Science Advances, SCI-Q1, IF 14.1). The dopamine-like reward propagation algorithm has been proposed for efficient SNN learning (IEEE TNNLS, SCI-Q1, IF 10.4). A multi-brain-region system has been designed by incorporating brain-like topology for efficient continuous controlling (IEEE TNNLS). A multi-scale plasticity algorithm (AAAI, top AI conference) and an energy-based Nash equilibrium algorithm have been proposed for SNN learning (IJCAI, top AI conference). Zhang's lab has publised 40 key research papers, including some top AI journals such as Science Advances, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, Cell iScience, Cognitive Computation, Frontiers in Neuroscience, and also some top AI conference such as AAAI, IJCAI, and ICASSP. He has also published 10 around patents related to SNN algorithms and applications. Research funding in Zhang's lab includes the National Key Research and Development Program of China (No. 2020AAA0104305, 6 Million RMB), the Strategic Priority Research Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (No. XDA27010000 and No. XDB32070000, 10 Million RMB), the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Major project (1.6 Million RMB), and the Youth Innovation Promotion Association CAS (0.8 Million RMB).
