他的研究和工作领域包括生态系统研究与管理，特别是生态系统网络的监测、研究、示范和政策支撑；气候变化方面的科学评估和气候变化适应特别是基于生态系统的适应方法；农业与农村发展，城市环境规划与管理等。他重视科学与政策的衔接，特别是科学对政策制定和谈判的支撑作用。

刘健研究员现任联合国环境署（UNEP）国际生态系统管理伙伴计划主任。该计划是由UNEP和中国科学院共同发起成立的国际计划，旨在促进生态系统与生物多样性研究与管理及其与发展中国家绿色经济的融合，该计划将在近期变为设在中国的国际生态系统管理中心。
他之前曾任联合国环境署气候变化适应计划主任，政府间气候变化委员会（IPCC）副秘书，中国科学院资源环境科学与技术局副局长，中国生态系统研究网络主任，国际山地中心（ICIMOD）环境计划主任等专业领导职务。他长期在生态系统研究和管理方面做了大量工作，领导和协调了若干国际计划，如“全球气候变化适应网络 （GAN）”和联合国环境署旗舰计划“生态系统为基础的适应（EBA）”等。
