Research Areas

(1) Catalytic conversion of Biomass
Declining fossil fuel reserves and the global climate change associated with the consumption of fossil fuel have stimulated intensive interest in developing renewable energy sources. Biomass, as the only renewable organic carbon source on earth, is being considered as a promising substitute for fossil resources. Heterogeneous catalysis is a green and effective way for the transformation of biomass into fuels and valuable chemicals. Our interest in this area covers the hydrolysis of cellulose, hydrogenolysis of cellulose into polyols, and the hydrogenolysis of glycerol.
(2) Cluster and single-atom catalysis
Cluster catalysts refer to the supported metal catalysts with the active metal species having subnanometer dimensions, while the single-atom catalysts refer to a special type of catalysts where all the active metal species are exclusively dispersed as single atoms. Both cluster and single-atom catalysts have become a new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis due to their unique catalytic properties in a variety of important reactions. Our research interests include the well-controlled synthesis of cluster and single-atom catalysts, fine-tuning of the local environment of the single-atom center as well as the electronic structures, and exploration of catalytic applications in energy- and environment-related reactions such as selective oxidation and selective hydrogenation.
