General
Prof. & Dr. Ming-Hua Qiu (or Ming-hua Chiu) was born in Lijiang,Yunnan Province, China, in 1963. He received his B.Sc. degree (1984) in Physical Chemistry and his Ph.D. degree (1996) in Organic Chemistry from Peking University. After university, he joined the Phytochemistry Lab of the Kunming Institute of Botany, CAS. He participated in the University of Tokyo (1989), Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University (1998, 2000), and University of Illinois at Chicago (2003) as graduated student, post doctor and visiting scholar, respectively. A full Professor since 1997, he is the author of over 220 publications, the applicant of 39 national invention patents and the editor of 2 books. His research is focus on biologically active natural products from Buxaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Cimicifuga, Ganoderma spp and the utilization of plant resources, such as using seed oil of Jatropha curcas to produce biodiesel and pyrethrum to manufacture green pesticide.

Research Interests

Prof. & Dr. QIU Minghua and his research group has studied the chemical constituents of more than 40 folk medicinal plants from genus Thladiantha, Neoalsomitra, Hemsley (Cucurbitaceae), Buxus, Sarcococca, Pachysandra (Buxueceae), Cephalotaxus (Cephalotaxaceae), Swertia, Veratrilla (Gentianceae), Cimicifuga, Actaea (Ranunculaceae), Ganoderma, Cooffea which included triterpenoid saponins, steroidal alkaloids, diterpenoid alkaloids, xanthones, iridoids and so on, as well as some bioactivities of these compounds and chemotaxonomy. He is very interesting in the chemical structure research natural products and developing Know-How of plant resource, specially natural insecticide. In a few years, his research group got the project of “developing of Pyrethrum Industry in China” from national government. And up to now, have established a planting base of more than 6000hectares Pyrethrum with improved breeds of Pyrethrium which contain 1.4-1.9% of pyrethrins, set up a CO2 SCFE factory for producing pyrethrins in Yunnan of China.
