Research Areas

Mainly focuses on fluid dynamics of turbomachinery, which has been the long-term technological challenge in both academic research and industrial application. We try to understand flow physics of turbomachinery through computional, experimental and theoretical studies. Based on this, performance improvement of turbomachinery can be achieved by blade design and passive or active control techniques. My current research has three themes:
• Unsteady flow features in compressor and its control
Flow field in compressor is intrinsic unsteady. The rational use of this unsteady effect has great potential in improving compressor performance. Unsteady features of tip leakage flow and separation have been explored by URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes, URANS), LES (Large Eddy Simulation, LES) and experiments. The evolutions of vortex structure and oscillating frequency were analyzed, and the resulting circumferential propagation characteristics were also studied. The further relations between circumferential propagation features and stall inception are now under investigation.
Rotating stall is one of the most challenging topics in the history of gas turbines. Among many control measures, tip air injection is one of effective methods to improve stall margin. Unsteady response of tip leakage flow to discrete micro tip injection and its effect on stability enhancement for both low speed and transonic axial compressors have been studied. The dimensionless total injected momentum can be used to scale the control effectiveness of different injection schemes on a single curve.
• Aerodynamic Design of compressor
To improve compressor performance, many direct optimization and inverse design methods have been developed for blade aerodynamic design. Self-developed CFD program in our group for solving the two and three dimension viscous N-S equations was inherited and developed. Coupling the in-house code with a modified design algorithm, which is based on the target pressure distribution, inverse design for blade profile was achieved. Performance matching for two rotors in a contra-rotating axial flow fan was studied by systematically comparing variable circulation flow patterns for each blade row.
• Noise of turbomachinery
Acoustic performance is closely related with unsteady flow in turbomachinery, especially pressure fluctuation. Its accurate prediction depends on the capture of flow details. LES has been used to simulate flow field in fan and pump. Acoustic analogy method and similarity law are adopted to study flow induced noise.
