Research Interests

Marine Bioactive Natural Products Discovery. It has been demonstrated that natural products are still playing a pivotal role in new drug discovery. The novel scaffolds found within nature far exceed the imagination and synthetic capabilities of chemists. The underexplored marine microorganisms have been recognized as an exciting resource in supplying novel chemotypes. We are focusing on the screening, fermentation, and discovery of bioactive natural products from marine actinobacteria and fungi, and therefore to obtain fundamentally new, clinically useful drug leads.
Marine Natural Products Biosynthesis. Genetic engineering of the biosynthetic pathways governing the complex bioactive secondary metabolites offers an alternative stragety to modify natural product leads. Our work in this area include: a) cloning and identification of biosynthetic pathways governing complex bioactive secondary metabolites, b) characterization of new enzymes capable of catalyzing novel chemistry, c) generation of new lead analogues through genetic manipulation, combinatorial biosynthesis, and heterologous expression strategies, and d) metabolic engineering to construct high-yield producing strain amenable to large-scale industrial fermentation for production of target metabolite/s.
Anti-infective and Anti-tumor Drug Discovery and Development.
