ABSTRACT

This book summarizes the main research results of lightning physics in the past decade. In order to provide readers with a systematic understanding of lightning physics, the book provides a detailed introduction to the charging mechanism and structure of thunderstorms, lightning detection technology, lightning activity at thunderstorm scale and global scale, as well as the latest research results on transient luminescence events in the middle and upper atmosphere and high-energy radiation from lightning. The main contents of the book include an overview of early scientific events and detection technologies that have an important impact on the history of lightning research, the charge structure and charging mechanism of thunderstorms, the physical processes of negative cloud to ground lightning, positive cloud to ground lightning, cloud lightning, rocket triggered lightning, lightning detection and positioning technology, lightning meteorology and climatology, transient luminous events in the upper and middle atmosphere above thunderstorms, and high-energy radiation phenomena caused by thunderstorms or lightning. This book is an important reference book for lightning researchers or graduate students, and can also be used as a undergraduate textbook for majors such as atmospheric science, insulation, and high-voltage. It is also an important reference book for technical personnel engaged in lightning protection engineering.
