研究方向为流体力学和物理海洋学，主要从事大洋环流的观测和数据分析，在海洋大气流动的低维结构和低频变异方面取得一系列发现。主持三项自然科学基金面上项目，曾担任国家重点基础973计划课题负责人和中国科学院重要方向项目首席科学家。现任爱思唯尔Deep-Sea Research I杂志副主编。
