Field of Research

Areas:

  • Systematics and biogeography of microdrile Oligochaeta (Annelida)
  • Ecology of macrofauna and meiofauna
  • Limnology of lotic and lentic waters

Interest:

  • Taxonomy and ecology of invertebrates: including macroinvertebrates (Oligochaeta, Insecta, Mollusca, etc.) and zooplankton.
  • Eutrophication and regime shift: critical factors for eutrophication (P or P+N ?), mechanisms of regime shifts in subtropical shallow lakes, ecological effects of high nitrogen on multiple scales, and practical strategies for eutrophication control.
  • River-floodplain ecology: effects of altered hydrological regimes on rivers and wetlands, environmental flow requirements and integrated strategies for restoration and protection of river-floodplain ecosystem.
  • Biomonitoring and ecological health assessment: freshwater ecosystem monitoring, diagnostic assessment indexes of ecosystem health.

Achievement:

1.  Systematics of invertebrates:

  • described over 50 new species of Annelida and 1 new species of Mollusca;
  • revised one genus of Doliodrilus (marine oligochaetes);

  • revealed the unique fauna of aquatic oliogochaetes in Yunnan and Tibet.

2.  Lake eutrophication and regime shift:

  • denied the TN:TP ratio as an index to identify limiting nutrient;

  • proved that attention should be mainly focused on P reduction in mitigating eutrophication;
  • found high nitrogen had little effects on submerged macrophytes and fish;
  • revealed the change rule of TP threshholds for the regime shifts between a clear-water state dominated by submerged macrophytes and turbid-water state dominated by phytoplankton;
  • found the TP thresholds for regime shifts to be nearly equal in shallow lakes from temperate to subtropical zones;
  • suggested that according to the subequality of TP thresholds, similar target concentrations for in-lake TP can be set in most shallow lakes worldwide to mitigate eutrophication.

3.  Biodiversity conservation of the Yangtze floodplain:

  • systematically demonstrated the relationship between hydrological connectivity and floodplain lake ecosystem;
  • found the highest species diversity and maximum total biomass at intermediate hydrological connectivity;
  • estimated the minimum protection area for river-connected lakes, which is the initiated estimation of floodplain protection area worldwide, and also the first to bring up that the cumulative species-area model is of better fitness for network design of reserves with high river-lake connectivity;
  • quantitatively analysed the water level fluctuation requirements of macrophytes and river-lake migration rhythms of the four major chinese carps, and put forward the measure about eco-hydrological regulation of river-lake sluice and dam;

  • proposed the holistic strategies for conservation and restoration of river floodplain lakes.

4.  Applied ecology:

  • established a technology system for lakeshore hydroecology restoration;

  • held the design of two demonstration projects for the National Water Project;

  • developed several water management schemes which have been applied and achieved favorable results.
